Day 5: Fortifying The Position
Today was the first of a predicted 4 days of overcast/rain. Blech. I'll let it slide NZ, I'll let it slide. But only on account of the fact that it's still spring. If this were summer... I'd shake my fist. Anyways, not really a bad thing because it allowed me to get up all this web stuff and do a ton a useful errands.
The tough part of the day was the rainy, wet run. I got out with Cary and a friend named Alex Wallace to do a shake out Monday run.
15min RE warm up to the "Velodrome". This is an awesome cement bike track with mad banked turns for maximum speed. I'd love to watch a race there sometime or bust out Cary's road bike for some time trials when it gets warm.
2 x (8 x 100 @ 800 pace, 100 jog rest) 5min jog rest.
15min RE cool down.
Got back and showered before taking the bus into town. Public transportation is really good here, though a bit more expensive (I think) than in the states. I don't have much experience though... One of the errands was to buy a "Snapper Card" for $10. You basically feed your snapper cash and it saves you mad $$ on buses and can be used in some convenience stores (NZ name: dairies 'DEER-ees'). With card, trip from our house to city is $2.40 instead of $5. Now, keep in mind the current exchange rate is .706 $US : 1 $NZ. So not bad.
The following is a good guide to some essentials (for runners at least) when living in the city.
Snapper Card: See above.
Gym: These are hard to come by outside of a university. I might be able to get a free membership through Tony Rogers and the Wellington Harriers, but only because he happens to have a free one sitting around from when he worked with them. The best one we found was "Les Mills". It's in a few cities in NZ and is really good but quite expensive. $40/week if you just do it per week. $20/week with 3yr contract. Now you can transfer contracts so it's likely to be a good idea to find someone with a 3-yr contract who's leaving. Buy it off of them. Use it for however long, and sell it again.
Blackberry Plan: Holy moly this is complicated. Their cell network is completely different from the US one. The biggest difference: if someone calls/txts you, you pay nothing and don't use any minutes/txts. They might get hit hard though depending on their plan and service. There is also a big fee that got hidden from you in the states for calling someone on another network "switching fee". As for service providers, there are 3 big players in NZ. Telecom (best for iPhones), Vodaphone (best for Blackberries), 2 Degrees (upstart cheap company bringing down the prior monopolies). I think the way I might go is to use a prepaid plan for txts/voice. Now depending on how badly I want it, the cheapest data plan (and this is nice that I can just get a data plan) is 100MB (plenty) for 39.95/month. Times .706 is under $30 so not freaking bad! Still haven't made the final decision but for now, I have a prepaid card Cary gave me with the number 022.606.8019 for voice and txts. It might be best if you just txt me and I'll get on Skype and make the call for $.02/min.
Clothes: Pretty expensive here, at least on the strip. Cheapest jeans were $89.99 NZ x .706 = ~$70 US. Did find some really nice under-button-down Ts for $10 NZ. Got 2.
IRD: Went to the post-office with Cary to fill out application for my IRD #. This is your NZ tax number. It generally takes 10 days to process and after that you can work no problem. Easy.
Banking: It costs $5 to use ATM to take out NZ cash from a US account. It also costs 5% of transaction to use US debit/credit card. So I decided the best thing would be to grab $500 from US account to open NZ account. That way I can take out/use money without any fees on top. Best bank, online banking, debit/credit card, friendly service: BNZ.
Sushi: Found 8piece sushi for $4.90 NZ!!!
Well that was the core of our shopping trip to Wellington. Still rainy. Back for some good old pasta and a ham sandwich.
Goodnight.
Day 4: Cheers!
I woke up today to sunlight in my window, quickly rolled out of bed and looked out. The view was incredible!
We have a perfect view of Hataitai, which is the western suburb of Wellington (check out the album for a view from the other side of the house, Wellington proper). I grabbed a PB&J, some tea and launched out the door into the beautiful 70degree heat. This is living. Cary and I stretched a few minutes and headed out for Wellington Harriers Headquarters. Once there, we met a dozen runners and I hit the toilet (bathroom in kiwi). Bad move, cause when I came out, the crew was gone. I talked for 5 minutes with the head dude (not really a coach) of the club, Graham Somebody. He's been everywhere so it was a really interesting convo. Cary eventually came back like a good mate and apologized way too much for leaving me behind. It was fault really.
However, turned out to be a blessing because the team ran into the city and Cary and I had decided anyways that we wanted to head out around Island Bay (One spectacular thing about living at the top of Mt Vic is that we can literally plan our runs from the window!)
I'll let the pictures tell the story of the run. We ran 90min, 14miles RE. Stretched a bit afterward, showered, and made way toward downtown.
The rest of the day was spent with Cary and his GF, Jane Andrews:
- Touring the waterfront
- Getting gellatos from Gelicious
- Taking a cable-car to the botanical gardens
- Grabbing a brew (I had Mac's Black) and an amazing Grubfish dinner at The Loaded Hog
- Buying a few clothes I desperately needed (still need some good jeans).
All that for under 6 miles of walking. I love this city, and our location is superb!
Got some technology going that night. Tomorrow: Errands.
Day 3: Stop. Drop. Kaboom Baby
Touchdown in Auckland at 5:20AM.
My first sight of New Zealand was a Mauri welcoming... arch. The woman I had been talking to on the flight explained it to me but I cannot recall at this point. I think I was too focused on making sure I had everything for customs.
Next sight was aisles and aisles of alcohol with pretty ladies trying to sell you on the duty-freeness of the opportunity. Once again, I was a bit too focused on customs to be in the right mind to explore the options.
Finally got to the customs line. I worried for nothing. Getting through customs was far, far easier than I thought it would be. I got asked about half a dozen times what I had in the computer monitor case and was informed that Air NZ was not responsible for any damage to the monitor. I suppose they gotta cover their bases.
Finally, finally, I boarded my last 45min puddlejumper to Wellington and got picked up promptly at 8:30AM by cousin Cary.
It's on.
Well actually, it was overcast and I was incredibly tired... I still marveled at the misty view from our house at the tippity-top of Mt Victoria before unpacking and checking out my room for the first time. The room is pretty tiny but similar to a Prospect-sized room so I can't complain.
Not much time to unwind because Cary had a meet that day. Sadly they didn't accept last-minute entrants for the 3k but I did a nice 6miler easy RE (Mitch code) and actually shivered a bit while I watched Cary run an 8:46. He did the noble deed of making sure the pace was honest after a crawling 35s for the first 200m. He of course paid for the move at the end but still ran well considering he told me he slept very little the previous night (I'm guessing nervous thoughts on my behalf... ah, thanks mate).
Forget what we had for dinner but we made the executive decision to stay in for the night. As an example of my jet lag, we turned on Blood Diamond and I fell asleep within 30min (yes that's about the point in the movie all the raiding is going on...)
Goodnight
Day 2: Shortest Day Of the Year
Today was November 27th, 2009. It was 4 hours long. I slept through all of it.
Day 1: A Sleepwalker’s Tale
The day leading up to departure was interesting. A little nostalgic. A little exciting. A lotta turkey... My brothers and I stayed up all night doing the strangest assortment of activities. this included:
- Playing various games.
- Talking about god and religion (first even semi-interesting conversation I've had on that topic in 4 years... Well maybe that's unfair, but first time I felt like I got a new perspective on things, felt my paradigm shift a little)
- Watching far too many "Sounds" clips from Who's Line Is It Anyways.
- Around 5AM I finally boxed up my desktop and monitor for the trip. Then packed away my clothes and whatnot around that gear. It actually made for a fairly good padding situation.
Anyways, grabbed some coffee cake, hugged the parents, and jumped in the Rav4. Slept 30min with my mouth wide open and head tilted back on the way to the airport. Weighed my bags and got shocked with the revalation of the expense of bringing your life with you on a trip. I get 2 50 lb bags and a carry-on. I suppose most can do with 120lbs but I had a desktop computer and monitor and speakers. Fortunately, I could even everything out to 47.5 49.5 and 50.0 lb bags. Woo! So I only had to pay $200 for a third bag. Could have been a lot worse... I'm also officially taking 162lbs of gear with me on my trip, exactly my body weight. Coincidence?... Yeah.
Hopped on the flight and slept soundly for the hour to Chicago. Then on to LA with a good 2 episodes of House (I'm giving it a chance, and 6 episodes in on the trans-pacific flight while I'm typing this, I gotta say... I really really like the theme music). I Also slept 2 hours on the flight to LA and had an aisle seat so unfotunately missed viewing the rockies. Landed in LA and got pleasantly blasted with heat. Damn, I have to find a way to live in SoCal. In LAX I made my last phone calls and txts for 5 months (I wonder if I'll miss the phone... We'll come back to that later) I saw a Wolfgang Puck, remembered hearing high praises about the place and dropped a pretty penny for a caesar salad. Terrific decision. Surprisingly filling too... Anyways, I tricked security into letting me get on an international flight and now here I am in a 747 jumbo jet (not tufts).
This plane is awesome and Air NZ service is the best I've experienced. I've already met a few interesting natives and as I look on the monitor at this crazy image of my plane in the middle of the pacific, the excitement is building (which sucks because I should be sleeping...) Ah well, gotta trust my body knows what's up. Maybe I should have tried a sleeping pill.
Well that's enough rambling for one entry. Let's see... passed 29 minutes. 1 to go, lets see how much I can write in that time. because at the end of this minute I w
